From the creators of Sonic Bloom, one of Colorado’s longest running summer music festivals, comes Sonic Blossom, it’s intimate, indoor, fall counterpart. Taking over Cervantes’ unrivaled dual venue set up in central Denver, the festival will encompass the same spirit of electronic and jam music one might expect from the Sonic Bloom family. Headlined by veteran ambient electronic producer Bluetech, with an all around awesome line-up that includes heavy hitter Spoonbill as well as CO favorites Dynohunter, and many other awesome acts. There should be an awesome mix of dancefloor bangers as well as chilled out vibes and everything in between. We got the chance to ask the headliner himself, Bluetech, about his current project and what we can expect to hear at Sonic Blossom tomorrow night. 23 years, 9 studio albums, 10 EPs, and countless shows. That’s how long the duo of MC Sean Daley and DJ Anthony Davis (we know them better as Slug and Ant) have been making music as Atmosphere. The hallmark of a true MC is one who knows how to clutch the crowd in their hand like so many clutch their mic, and even after 23 years – the Rhymesayers label boss remains the consummate professional in that regard, deftly straddling the line between sage lyricism and sycophantic braggadocio. Together with Ant’s brooding yet buoyant production style, the sold out crowd at Mission Ballroom last Friday was treated to a sonic jaunt through the group’s history, dropping gems from their many classics including God Loves Ugly and Sevens Travels all the way through their latest release Mi Vida Local. This epic performance (preceded by the same from opener Brother Ali) was not one likely to soon be forgotten. Check out the photo recap courtesy of Adrian Garcia below! – Kevin Lucas
Fire is coming, fire is coming,” a David Lynch narration opens our ears as young heads circle around an outdated room listening to iconic horror tales of Tommy — a moment, captivating in its nod of old on-air chronicles and the story of the world’s burnings. The shapeshifting Steven Ellison, better known by his moniker Flying Lotus, made his first incendiary contribution to Denver’s newest venue, The Mission Ballroom, this past Friday night and goosebumps ensued.

Singer and songwriter Jamila Woods has been paying dues in the music industry for quite a while now, and she’s finally getting some much deserved spotlight with her sophomore album LEGACY! LEGACY!, a soul kissed modern masterpiece which dropped last month. In addition to the chart spots and critical acclaim the album is recieving, Woods has been on the road for weeks serenading adoring fans at packed and sold out nights across the country. We caught one of the closing nights of the tour at the historic Star Theatre in downtown Portland, Oregon. With tour openers Nitty Scott and one-woman-show Duendita (who was incredible) to set things off, everyone was more than ready when Jamily finally floated onto the stage with her excellent band. Playing most of the material from LEGACY! LEGACY!, Jamila displayed some serious star power with a pitch perfect and energetic performance. Glowing with a huge smile between each song, it was evident that Jamila she hasn’t quite gotten used to seeing sold out crowds singing every word along with her. Check out the photo recap courtesy of Robb Perry and be sure to check out Jamila Woods’ LEGACY! LEGACY! out now!

Montreal based DJ/Producer Lunice is one of the music industries best kept secrets. While his accolades as a record producer, and member of duo TNGHT are more than extensive, he maintains a relative level of relative anonymity in the public eye as a solo act. His talent stretches from production and DJing, to dancing and performance art, and everything in between, and he’s earned the respect of many of the top names in music throughout his career. He’s finally getting more and more attention with his genre bending style that draws heavily from hip hop and trap roots. With intricate textures and some of the snappiest drums you’ve heard, Lunice has honed a razor sharp, and often dark sound that is both entrancing and unpredictable. This rising star is constantly in the studio, but he’s doing a limited run of a few North American dates that includes a headline appearance at Denver’s award-winning venue, The Black Box, on Feb 28th!
Telefon Tel Aviv is the musical project of Joshua Eustis, an producer who in his own words,”is trying very hard to make music as a way to sweat out all the nasty things.” It has devolved from his eye-to-eye collaboration with the late Charles Wesley Cooper, III, into “the musical detritus of all the horror, awe, despair, hope, beauty, and contempt in our world.” Known for his dreamy sonic landscapes, Eustis takes listeners to the depths of his imagination, breaking all rules and expectations of stereotypical electronic music in the process. He’s taking over Denver’s award winning venue The Black Box in Capitol hill on December 22nd, and we can’t think of a better place to dive in to the deep layers of Telefon Tel Aviv’s unique music.
Papadosio, comprised of all original members, have been building their dedicated fan base over the last decade. Best known for their energetic live performances, the band has packed out Red Rocks Amphitheater for headlining shows the past two years running. This band will have you dancing your ass off one minute, then moving you to tears the next; prepare to have your mind blown October 27th when Papadosio slides through the Mile High city again, this time at The Fillmore Auditorium for a more intimate performance. Seeing their mesmerizing instrumentation, improvisational skills, and intricate visual production is an explosive experience we suggest you don’t miss.
Boulder-based, sax playing, dance music producer SoDown has been making big waves over the last year playing festivals like Coachella, Electric Forest, Big Dub, Sonic Bloom, and more. He’s gearing up to release an EP mid October, and then sets off on two major tours supporting OPIUO and The Floozies, but before hitting the road he’s showing some love to the hometown with an intimate headlining performance at the legendary Fox Theatre on October 6th with support from Megan Hamilton and Oklio.
The inaugural Grandoozy has come and gone, and the organizers of Superfly (the minds behind Bonnaroo and Outside Lands) can claim another successful event to their name. Growing pains are to be expected with any opening, but over the weekend they were impressively minimal, centering largely on the difficulty of concert-goers’ arrival and exit. What most will remember, whether they purchased a one or three day pass, is the relentless talent that radiated from the four stages in Overland Park. Check out the breakdown of our favorite performances from each day.
Hailing from one of America’s most dangerous and forgotten neighborhoods, New Orleans’ 7th Ward, SuicideboyS have been taking the nation by storm. They only recently got on our radar after word spread of the duo quickly selling out large auditoriums around the country, something you don’t see all that often from independent artists. We had to see what the hype was all about. Their music has hardcore rap vibes with heavy bass and unexpected samples that both rappers really work well with. We’ve seen a lot of sold out shows, but to say the $uicideboy$ concert at The Fillmore was packed, would be a massive understatement. On either side people were practically being pushed off the railings to get a view, and in the center of the venue (for anyone brave enough to enter) there was a full blown mosh pit that could rival any metal show.
The creators of two of the world’s largest festivals, Bonaroo and Outside Lands are blessing the city of Denver with a brand new festival all of their own, Grandoozy, to be held at Overland Park Sept. 14th-16th. Featuring headliners Kendrick Lamar, Florence & The Machine, and the legendary Stevie Wonder, this festival is of unprecidented magnitude for our city. Click here for the complete line up & performance schedule. With more than 40 incredible acts spanning many genres including hip hop, electronic, rock & more, there is something for everyone. Tickets are still available at www.grandoozy.com now!
California based record label Courteous Family is home to some of the most talented and promising young DJ/producers making experimental bass music. Several of the label mates have teamed up for a North American tour headlined by multidisciplinary artist and self proclaimed electric sorceress Huxley Anne, who’s been gaining popularity over the last year since the release of her debut album Ilium in 2017.
Australian bass music producer Zeke Beats is truly in a lane of his own, drawing from hip hop, trap, dubstep, and just about any other genre you can imagine. His dynamic music is both accessible and unpredictable with hard hitting drums and crisp synths at the forefront of his productions. With an impressive resume of DMC and other competition wins under his belt Zeke incorporates a mastery of true turntablism into an arena where the once fundamental Technics 1200 has become foriegn technology to most DJ’s. While his skill set may be rooted in past tradition, his music and sound is still far ahead of its time.
Future Funk collective Lettuce has been building a dedicated fanbase for the past few years doing headline shows and festivals around the country. On the heels of their 2017 release Witches Stew (a tribute to Miles Davis,) they are headed to Colorado for another round of Dead Rocks.
